BCA is pleased to offer this exclusive tour in response to an invitation from Smithsonian textile artist,Porfirio Gutierrez (see his letter below). As his guests, we'll be given an insider's look at Oaxaca, its culture, cuisine and people. Together we'll visit his studio, learn about natural dye rug making, visit cultural sites like Mitla, and enjoy some great food. We'll be amazed by the beautiful architecture such as the Santo Domingo Plaza,and talk to women artisans in embroidery, alebrijes and black clay pottery. Price includes ground transportation, lodging and most of your meals. One participant from last year's tour wrote, "This is the best tour I've ever been on." Oaxaca has a magic all its own and this is a great way to experience it.
Sample Itinerary: After arriving in Oaxaca, you'll be met at the airport by tour guides who will escort you to your hotel to settle in. The next day, after breakfast at the hotel, we'll take a pleasant walk to discover the Centro Historico, the Zocalo and the charm of the Santo Domingo Plaza. We'll have a long and hearty lunch nearby with the late afternoon free for exploring museums, galleries or shops full of wonderful things.
The next day we travel together to Porfirio Gutierrez' home studio where we meet his family who will take us through a demonstration of natural dye techniques. Everyone gets a chance to participate in making traditional Oaxacan tamales for lunch before heading back to the hotel.
Days four, five and six in Oaxaca include other ventures exploring the culture, the environment, and the studios of those who practice sustainable craft traditions. We'll have a chance to interact in an intimate way with the artists and their families of Zapotec culture.
Day seven is your chance to explore on your own. Guides can arrange for you to visit Monte Alban or other sites before returning to the hotel for the farewell dinner. Departure the next day, with transport to the airport arranged by your guide.
Group size: limited to twelve, including BCA host.
Cost; $2800 (BCA Members) and $2900 (nonmembers). A deposit of $1000 will hold your spot; fully refundable before Oct 1, 2020, when the balance is due. Cancellation after Oct.. 1, 2020: No refund unless there is a waiting list and your place on the trip can be filled. In this case, a $200 administration cancellation fee will apply.
Fee does not include airfare.
We encourage guests to consider purchasing traveler's insurance. A wide variety of insurance options are available (medical, cancel for any reason, lost luggage, etc). All guests will be asked to sign a release form and complete an Emergency Medical Contact form before departure.

When I invite our guests to join us in Oaxaca, I am sharing my family’s home, traditions, history, and our deep love for our Zapotec culture. We offer a very unique perspective, one that our guests can appreciate immediately when they arrive in Oaxaca. We meet person-to-person with members of our community, we hear their voices and share their stories. Through artisan workshop visits and home cooked meals we’ll meet the people who are the soul of Oaxaca.
We are proud to be the leading indigenous travel program to come from Teotitlan del Valle, and we have the added distinction of being recognized by the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian, the New York Times, and the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe. My family and I were the first Zapotec weavers to have a solo exhibition in Oaxaca’s Textile Museum and we have contributed our unique artist materials to the Forbes Pigment Collection, the world-renowned collection of Harvard University’s Fogg Art Museum.
Oaxaca is a land of tradition, ancient arts, creativity and change. The capital, Oaxaca de Juárez, is a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with old Spanish churches and solid stone buildings, yet it hosts a thriving contemporary art scene and is home to wonderfully innovative projects that connect traditional ways with the modern world. The villages of the Central Valleys are deeply rooted ancient Zapotec communities. Our ancestors were one of the first to cultivate corn and may have created the first written language of the Americas thousands of years ago. In this trip you will focus on one of the region’s most important villages, Teotitlán del Valle, and explore the connections which bind it to the rest of the communities in the region. Our exclusive travel program offers a taste of the ancient and contemporary, the seemingly permanent and the dynamically changing. Our hosts, my family, will introduuce us to ancient rituals inherited through generations and demonstrate how our work speaks to modern times. And with visits to places like the Oaxacan Textile Musem and San Agustin Arts Center we’ll get a taste of the cutting edge pulse of this ancient place. ~ Porfirio Gutíerrez
