Have you ever wondered what exactly is Sonoran food and how it differs from Mexican cuisine in general? This gastronomic tour of modern Nogales will clarify the regional characteristics of our culinary vibrant southern neighbor in situ while providing a local historical background. Visitors to Nogales, Sonora are often limited to walking distance in the main tourist zones for dining options while visiting south of the border. This tour takes you off the beaten path deeper into Nogales to the gastronomic zone of local Nogalenses centered around the street known as Calle Hermosillo. The first stop is at the unquestionable landmark and symbol of the metropolis of Nogales, the Mono Bichi (the 'naked guy') and the monument to Mexican president Benito Juarez. This will be followed by a visit and tasting the first craft micro brewery in the state of Sonora, Nogales Brewing Company. Here, the two young owner/entrepreneurs will explain their backgrounds and process behind the art of brewing. After the tasting and opportunity to fill and take home some growlers of NBC beer, we will head to the restaurant La Llorona of the Chef Fernando Luévanos, a transplant from Guadalajara via Buenos Aires, Argentina. The chef will serve us a tasting menu of some of the highlights from his menu featuring central Mexican regional cuisine and we will be able to partake is some truly interesting variations of aguas frescas, mescales, and tequilas.
Tour participants gather at 1:15 at the parking lot of Burger King in Nogales, AZ where you can park (small fee), then meet with a BCA representative who will escort you on a short walk through the DeConcini Port of Entry to the rental van (about six blocks). Return back to the US is planned for in the 7:00pm hour but please note that travel plans can change and border crossing times vary greatly.
