Border Community Alliance is pleased to offer a special tour for those of you who still reside in Southern Arizona over these beautiful monsoon summer months. This tour is set for August 8 - 10 and we will be travelling to the Rio Sonora region for a special cultural festivity known as Dia de San Lorenzo. Saint Lawrence is the patron saint of the community of Huepac, just down-river a few kilometers from Banamichi, Sonora where we will be staying at the exceptional La Posada del Rio Sonora. In the Roman Catholic calendar, the feast or celebration day of San Lorenzo is August 10. Lorenzo is the saint martyred by being barbecued by the Romans and apparently his legend states that mid-barbecue Lorenzo advised those Romans to turn him over as that side was done. Given this legend, Lorenzo is also the patron saint of cooks and comedians.

As the protector and patron of the  Rio Sonora community of Huepac - a name that means 'place where the valley widens' in Opata language, the municipality honors him with an annual celebration on August 10 and the days leading up to that day.  Included in this celebration are matachines dancers (similar to the matachines dancers of New Mexico), the dusk parade known as 'la marmota,' and other rituals such as the dance of 'los moros y cristianos' all representing the resilient cultural legacies and mestizaje of the Spanish and indigenous peoples.

This rural tourism experience is set for a summer month and respecting the heat of midday, tour activities will be limited to the early morning or evening time for taking in the festivity. Pools are nearby our accommodation and also exist as an option during the mid-day down or siesta time to avoid extended direct sun exposure. Being Summer, this tour is also discounted $100 from our regular in-season (Sept-May) tour to the Rio Sonora but has the added benefit of being immersed in a special celebration of the diverse cultural heritage in our borderlands.

Registration: $495 Per Person (double occupancy) $570 (single occupancy)

Included: Transportation with professional driver, 2 nights stay at La Posada del Rio Sonora, meals, and guide.
