Skull and skeleton motifs have almost become a stereotype of Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebration. But this form of art (which we call“calavera art”) has a vivid history and contemporary relevance that go far beyond Day of the Dead. Join us for a fascinating journey through Mexico’s calavera art tradition, beginning more than 100 years ago and emerging into a vital and pervasive art form in modern Mexico. We’ll conclude with some unexpected examples of calavera art crossing the border and become a new part of the art scene in the United States.  Our presenters, Russ and Blyth Carpenter, are experienced authors, teachers and speakers who include music and video to keep things lively.
