Description

Magdalena is perhaps best known as the site of Father Eusebio Kino's grave and chapel and indeed, it was one of twenty-five missions he established between the years 1687 and 1711 when he died. A Jesuit priest from Italy, he was also a cartographer, an astronomer, a horticulturalist and a humanitarian. In October thousands of people, including many from the Tohono O'odham and the Yaqui nations make the pilgrimage to Magdalena to pay tribute to his legacy, often on foot. We will travel by van through the rolling hillside, leaving the noise and hustle of Nogales behind, stopping first at San Ignacio before entering what the federal government has designated the "Magical Pueblo" of Magdalena. Local guides will provide background of its special places before we come to the central plaza with its magnificent setting of church, chapel and shrine. Charming shops around the plaza will tempt shoppers, so bring extra cash if you wish. After lunch (included in the fee), we will visit one of the local non-profits, an entreprising venture with coffee roasting and beef jerky fund-raising projects. The guides for this trip are Alex La Pierre, a staff member of the National Park Service in Tumacacori and Jerry Haas, Executive Director of BCA.

NOTE: After meeting in Nogales, Arizona we will immediately walk across the border to load the van and begin our journey. An orientation will be given as we travel.
