In the spring of 2014, two writers bought an 1880's row house in Tucson's Barrio Viejoy National Historic Register District. The house was just one step away from being condemned, and came complete with graffiti (on the inside) and rafts of roosting pigeons (alson on the inside). This class will detail the restoration process of a traditional mud adobe home, as well as address questions of what it means to make a home in an historic house and in an historic neighborhood in the Southwest borderlands. Of particular interest will be the question of what it means to 'save' what was once a Mexican row house in an area that has become almost fully gentrified by white Anglos.
