Summary

Cross-cultural communication is predicated upon the uniquely-human process of perception. After a brief inventory of the many subcultures to which each of us belong, we will drill down on the process of perception. As we investigate selection of phenomena in the world around us, the organization of the phenomena we choose to pay attention to, and finally our interpretation of the phenomena once we had analyzed it—then and only then can we isolate and investigate the construct of stereotype. It will be through understanding how we arrive at stereotypes, and how those unexamined stereotypes become prejudices, that all of us will more completely appreciate our own perceptive abilities and the capacities for understanding of others. (Rick Moritz has studied and taught intercultural communication at colleges and universities across the U.S. for twenty years. This class will examine the workings of two foundations of effective, efficient intercultural communication: effective listening and perception as both inform empathy and understanding.
